जब भारत में विदेशियों का आक्रमण बढ़ने लगा तब राजाओं और लोगों ने अपनी धन-संपत्ति को सुरक्षित स्थान पर रखना शुरू किया। ईरान और तुर्की के मुस्लिम आक्रमणकारी यहां का सोना और स्त्रियां लूटकर ले जाते थे। इसके लिए वे ऐसे स्थान और राजाओं के इलाके चुनते थे, जो कमजोर होते थे।
बाद में जब नवाबों का काल शुरू हुआ तो मुगलों में इधर-उधर से एकत्रित धन-संपत्ति और हीरे-जवाहरातों को अंग्रेजों से छिपाने का प्रचलन बढ़ा। दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध के समय जापान की बमबारी के भय से कई नवाबों और दूसरे लोगों ने भूमिगत कमरे और सुरंगें बनाई थीं, जहां वे अपने खजाने को छिपाकर रखते थे।
अंग्रेजों के काल में सबसे ज्यादा नजर सोना, चांदी, हीरे और मोती पर रखी जाती थी। उन्होंने सभी कीमती धातुओं को सरकार की देखरेख में और उसका लेखा-जोखा रखने के आदेश दिए थे जिसके चलते नवाबों और राजाओं सहित सभी ने अपने-अपने खजाने को गाड़ना या छिपाना शुरू कर दिया था।
राजा तो अपने खजाने को छिपाने के लिए बाकायदा बड़ी-बड़ी सुरंगें या तहखाने बनाते थे। कुछ तो लंबी-चौड़ी बावड़ियां बनाते थे जिसमें पानी के बहुत अंदर जाने के बाद नीचे गुफा या सुरंगों का निर्माण करते थे, जहां वे सोना चांदी और हीरे जेवरात रखते थे और फिर बाहर से उस सुरंग को बाद कर देते थे। आज भी ऐसी कई बावड़ियां हैं जिनके बारे में कोई नहीं जानता।
सोचिए, सुनसान और वीराने में बावड़ी की जरूरत क्या? एक बावड़ी से दूर 20-25 किलोमीटर पर दूसरी बावड़ी होती थी, जो पहली से सुरंग के माध्यम से जुड़ी रहती थी। यह खजाना छिपाने और दूसरे राजाओं के आक्रमण के बाद भागने के काम आती थी।
बंजारा और आदिवासी : हिन्दू समाज के बंजारा समुदाय को 'खानाबदोश' मानवों का समुदाय कहा जाता है, जो एक ही स्थान पर बसकर जीवन-यापन करने के बजाय एक से दूसरे स्थान पर निरंतर भ्रमणशील रहते हैं। भारत में वर्तमान में बंजारा समाज कई प्रांतों से निवास करता है। महाराष्ट्र, कर्नाटक, आंध्रप्रदेश, राजस्थान, गुजरात, उत्तरप्रदेश तथा मप्र प्रांतों में बंजारा समाज की संख्या अधिक है। इस समाज को दुनिया के बहुत से रहस्यों का पता रहता है।
बंजारा समुदाय के लोग और आदिवासियों के पास भी बहुत मात्रा में सोना, चांदी और जेवरात होते थे। वे उनकी सुरक्षा के लिए अपने डेरे से कहीं दूर जमीन में गाड़ देते थे और उस स्थान पर अपनी कोई 'निशानी' बना देते थे या कुछ लोग उक्त स्थान पर किसी 'देवता' की स्थापना कर देते या पीपल या बड़ का झाड़ लगा देते थे। पहले उनकी महिलाओं को सोने से लदी देखा जा सकता था, लेकिन अब नहीं।
कहते हैं कि बंजारा या आदिवासी समाज अपने धन को जमीन में गाड़ने के बाद उस जमीन के आस-पास तंत्र-मंत्र द्वारा 'नाग की चौकी' या 'भूत की चौकी' बिठा देते थे जिससे कि कोई भी उक्त धन को खोदकर प्राप्त नहीं कर पाता था। और जिस किसी को उनके खजाने का पता चल जाता और वह उसे चोरी करने का प्रयास करता तो उसके सामना नाग या भूत से होता था।
पिंडारियों का खजाना : कहते हैं पिंडारियों के पास अथाह सोना था, जो उन्होंने व्यापारियों से लूटा था। भारतीय इतिहास की बीती दो सदियां लुटेरे पिंडारी या ठगों की करतूतों से रंगी हुई हैं। पिंडारियों का एक बड़ा वर्ग लूटपाट और ठगी करने लगा था।
ये ठग पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी व्यापारियों और यात्रियों के काफिलों को लूटते रहे। मुखबिरों के जरिए लुटेरों और ठगों को इनके लौटने की राह, ठिकाना और माल की खबर लग जाती थी। लूटा हुआ सोना-चांदी को ये लोग खेत में, सुनसान जगहों पर या किसी मंदिर के पास गाड़ देते थे। गिन्नियां, कपड़े और खाने-पीने का सामान खुद अपने पास रखते थे।
करीब दो सदी पहले तक ठगों का इतना आतंक था कि अंग्रेजों को उनके खात्मे के लिए अलग दस्ता तैनात करना पड़ा था जिसका नेतृत्व एक आला अंग्रेज अफसर विलियम स्लीमैन करते थे। इतिहास में स्लीमैन का नाम इसलिए हमेशा याद रखा जाएगा, क्योंकि उन्होंने समूचे मध्योत्तर भारत को इन लुटेरों और ठगों के जाल से मुक्ति दिलाई थी। 17वीं सदी के उत्तरार्ध से लेकर 18वीं सदी तक इनका आतंक रहा। खासकर वारेन हेस्टिंग्ज को इनका अंत करने का श्रेय जाता है।
